Thesis Project: AI-Based Recognition of Italian Railway Signals – A Case Study of Potential Hacker Attacks

As an AI & Computer Vision Intern, I contributed to a critical research project focused on developing an intelligent image recognition system for identifying Italian railway signals. I collected and labeled a custom dataset of over 3,000 images (including signal and non-signal frames) from cab ride videos, and used Python, OpenCV, and deep learning tools (e.g., TensorFlow/Keras) to build a binary classification model.

To assess system reliability, I simulated cyberattack scenarios by introducing blurred, corrupted, and noisy images, and evaluated the model’s accuracy under both normal and adversarial conditions. My work also involved dataset balancing, performance testing, and documentation for internal reporting and risk assessment frameworks (NIS2 compliance and FY25/FY27 targets).
